Help! My Invisalign Aligners Won’t Go On!

With Invisalign, your treatment works because your aligners fit securely to your teeth, moving them gradually without the need for wires and brackets. But what happens when they don’t fit correctly? After all, your treatment won’t be successful if you can’t wear your trays. If you’re struggling to put yours on, here are a few suggestions to help get them to go on, and what you should do if they don’t.

Chew on This

A handy trick that many people don’t know about is using an Invisalign Chewie to help pop your aligners onto your teeth. Chewies are reusable plastic sticks that you bite down on as you’re putting your aligners in, pushing them to their proper place. To use them, simply bite down starting at the back of your arch and slowly slide them forward, repeating until the entire aligner is secured.

Take a Step Back

If you cannot fit your aligner on with the help of a Chewie, you may need to switch back to your most recent set of trays again but speak to your orthodontist about this first as it could set your treatment plan back. If you find yourself regularly struggling to put them on, you may also want to ensure that you’re meeting the 22-hour daily time commitment. Remember, you only get two aligner-free hours a day, and exceeding this could slow your progress and make your trays difficult to attach.

Do Your Bite Exercises

If you’ve been prescribed bite exercises by your orthodontist, make sure you’re doing them as directed. They may seem like yet another responsibility you don’t have time for, but they will help your treatment complete on schedule, saving you time in the long run. Your front teeth sometimes need a little extra help from these movements since they’re not used as frequently as the back ones, which benefit from the pressure applied by speaking and chewing encouraging them to move.

Other Reasons Your Aligners May Not Fit

If none of these tips help secure a better fit, your aligners could be damaged. To prevent this from happening, never wear them while you’re eating or drinking anything but cold or room-temperature water, as this can cause the plastic to warp or melt.

Remember, your treatment relies on wearing your aligners exactly as prescribed. If you’re struggling to get a good fit, don’t give up. Try one of the above tips or speak to your orthodontist for help ensuring that your teeth move on schedule.
